Florida
has its own charm. I spent just over a year there. Desperate for work, I
finally applied at the day labor for hire and along with the most
interesting characters you could ever wish to meet I lined up at 5 am. My
lipstick perfectly applied, the managers first mistook me as someone who
came to hire laborers.
No, I said, I am here to work. And work I did -
until I thought I would drop dead from exhaustion. $5.50 per back-breaking
hour. I would not exchange those experiences for anything in the world.
They were priceless.
I had a little bit of money in my pocket and my
self respect.
I quickly realized something very important: it
is impossible to contemplate anything beyond how tired and hungry you are
and that is why so many people who do such physical labor never break free
from that life. I have deep understanding and respect for the laborers of
this world.
